Hospitalist wRVU targets

See what your wRVU target means per shift.

Take a recent month off your production report: the wRVUs and the shifts you worked. Add the shifts you’ll work this year and your annual target. You get where that pace lands for the year and how far off the target you are per shift.

How the calculation works

Your production vs. your target

Pick the period your numbers cover. Choose Full year to compare a completed year instead of projecting one.

The wRVU column, not total RVUs
Only the shifts covered by that wRVU total

Reading the gap per shift

The gap per shift is what every shift would have to add for the year to land on target. A month is a better sample than a week: one heavy or light week moves the pace, a month mostly doesn’t.

Reachable or not

Picture a normal shift on your census, with the support you have, and ask whether you could get that many more wRVUs out of it. If not, and the target doubles as your bonus threshold, the base is the offer. A few things move the answer:

  • Where the target came from, and whether the doctors behind that number worked the schedule you will.
  • Your shifts a year and your hours a shift.
  • What the shifts are: rounding, admitting, nights, open ICU, APP supervision.
  • How shared visits, leave, and a partial year get credited.

Connect the target to your bonus

A lot of contracts use the target as the bonus threshold too. If yours does, take your base and your rate over to the bonus calculator and see what each wRVU above the threshold pays and what the year comes to.

Calculate the bonus above your threshold

Common questions

What if I work 7 on 7 off?

Enter a month’s wRVUs and the shifts you worked that month, then your average shifts a month across the year, off weeks and leave included, or your planned shifts a year. The calculator runs your pace across that schedule, not across every week of the year.

What if I already exceed my target?

The result shows how far above the target you are, per shift and for the year. If the target is also your bonus threshold, that annual difference is what your bonus rate pays on, before any cap or tier in your contract.

How the calculation works

Projecting from a shorter period

Observed wRVUs per shift
equals wRVUs in the period ÷ shifts in that period
Planned annual shifts
equals average shifts per month × 12, or the annual figure you enter
Estimated annual wRVUs
equals observed wRVUs per shift × planned annual shifts
Target wRVUs per shift
equals annual target ÷ planned annual shifts
Gap per shift
equals (annual target - estimated annual wRVUs) ÷ planned annual shifts

The projection assumes the rest of the year runs like the period you entered.

Which period to enter

Use a period with a complete wRVU report and the same kind of shifts you plan to work. A report still waiting on credited wRVUs runs low.

Comparing a completed year

Choose Full year and the calculator divides your actual wRVUs and your target by the shifts you worked. Nothing is projected.

Not a benchmark

No peer numbers here. The calculator compares your production with your own target.
