Hospitalist work RVUs per shift

See your wRVUs per shift and per scheduled hour.

One period of your production report: the wRVUs, the shifts, and how long the shifts ran. You get wRVUs per shift, the number to compare month to month on the same schedule, and per scheduled hour, the one to use when shift lengths differ.

Your wRVUs per shift and hour

Any period works, a week to a year, as long as the wRVUs and the shifts come from the same one.

Total scheduled hours divided by shifts

Why a night posts fewer wRVUs

Your admits post under your name, and so does critical care when a rapid or a code on a cross-cover patient turns into 99291. The rest of cross-cover bills nothing: one E/M per patient per date, and the day team’s note usually takes it. Whether the 4 a.m. admit the day team re-sees at 7 is your H&P or theirs is group policy, and that policy is most of the gap between a night report and a day report.

Use your pace to check a target

Take the same period’s wRVUs and shifts to the target calculator, add the shifts you plan to work and your annual target, and it tells you whether this pace gets you there and the gap per shift.

Common questions

Should I enter work RVUs or total RVUs?

Work RVUs, the wRVU column on your production report. Total RVUs add practice expense and malpractice on top, and most contracts don’t pay on them.

Can I turn this into patients per shift?

Not from the wRVU total alone. A long list of follow-ups and a short list of admits can land on the same number. For census, use your encounter counts.

How the calculation works

Production and hours

wRVUs per shift
equals work RVUs ÷ shifts
wRVUs per scheduled hour
equals work RVUs ÷ (shifts × average hours per shift)

The hourly divides by scheduled hours, so the hour you stayed to finish notes after sign-out isn’t in it, and neither is time spent supervising an APP whose visits bill under their name.
